RELEASE DATE: 13 DEC 2019
GENRE: EXPERIMENTAL ROCK / SYNTH / INDIE BALLAD
Who knew that in between the otherworldly experimentation of the Voidz and the warm familiarity of the Strokes, Julian Casablancas can build an entirely new realm in between those two worlds where his two bands inhabit. 'Did My Best' has all the makings of the type of brooding melancholy that Strokes fans would love (especially if you can still remember that feeling of listening to 'I'll Try Anything Once' for the first time like you discovered the Holy Grail), but it's tied to the sound of a Julian Casablancas that didn't publicly exist pre-First Impressions of Earth. With Mac DeMarco on the production, Julian's crooning is turned up tenfold into a wavy, self-effacing drunken lament - rightfully so, considering that it's a song about nostalgia that pisses on the concept of nostalgia. Julian Casablancas is pissed at people bringing up his first two Strokes records and he's proverbially pissing on you like he just drank too much alcohol through the wonderful inflections of this track. A metaphor as disgusting as this song is good.
